Early Seattle Bicycle History

In 1879, twenty-nine years after Duwamps was established, the first bicycle appeared on a ship docking in the Seattle harbor. Destined for the general store owned by William H Pumphrey. Four day's later it was sold to Jules Lipsky who bought it for his son.

In July of 1888 the first bicycle tournament took place. The main event was a race between a bicycle and a horse over a five mile course. The Grand Prize was a whopping $250. No word as of yet as to which conveyance won.
